So my boy has officially started Kindergarten. After years of talking about it and preparing him, it had finally happened. He was so excited about school, even if he had been to Kids R Kids for Pre-K, it still didn’t take away the thrill from him.
Waking up at 6:30am is no easy task for my boy. I literally have to drag him out of bed. I, on the other hand, had to wake up at 6:00am just to make myself presentable enough to take him to school. That is not easy for me either!
All grown up!
Fist day of school went smooth. The hubby was able to get the night before off and we worked as a team to get him to school. Lauren came along and we took him straight to his classroom. It was such a nice surprise that his teacher, Ms. Tousek greeted him by name. They first met at an orientation/meet the teacher event they had a few days before.
In front of his homeroom
This first week, he’s been learning about the days of the week and the months of the year. I am also learning! Learning how to get him to sit and do his homework. Learning how to explain to him why he cannot play video games and watch his YouTube videos on school nights. Learning how to do my hair and face in 5 minutes…
This week we got our first Family Project. Apparently they are making an “alphabet line” for their classroom. Christian has been assigned the letter A. He brought home a card stock paper with “Aa” printed on in and we needed to decorate it with an item that begins with that letter. Christian wanted to do “alligator”. So I brainstormed thinking of “clever” ways of doing an alligator. My plan was to cut out an alligator-shaped green construction paper then glue it to the paper after drawing some scales and eyes. Then I started searching on the internet on school projects… If you went to school in Manila, Philippines like I did, then you should be familiar with Recto – the place where you can “buy” your homework…LOL! Well, I feel like the internet is the ALMOST the same thing. Not that I copied someone else’s homework, I just found an idea and used it. This is what I came up with:
Project “A as in Alligator”
Basically, we took some green foam sheets, cut out a letter A and glued it sideways on the paper. Then we cut out two little “humps” and glued some eyes on where the eyes should be. Then cut out some small light brown triangle foam sheets and made those into teeth. I wanted to use white, but it kind of disappeared into the white background.
I hope we get an “A” for this project!
Lauren had sleep apnea. I say “had” coz I’m hoping her surgery fixed that problem. She has been a loud snorer since she was an infant. At first, I thought it was so funny that a little girl so sweet and cute can snore so loud. It wasn’t so funny when she was around three years old and she kept waking up coughing. And even less funny when after her 4th birthday she woke up gasping for air. So, I explained her symptoms to her pediatrician who then referred me to some ENT doctors after confirming her tonsils were unusually large. I picked one and we decided to have both her tonsils and adenoids taken out.
She had the surgery Tuesday. OMG, right before surgery in the pre-op area, Lauren was throwing a fit! She started complaining of being hungry (she didn’t eat since the night before as required for the surgery). The she started screaming the word hungry over and over again. She was so loud, the nurses had to separate us from the other kids that were about to have surgery! The nurses and doctors felt she would be difficult to get in the OR, so I had to put on a “bunny suit” and escort her into the OR. Then I had to lift her onto the OR table and hold her down until the “sleeping gas”kicked in. Man, that was an experience!
We were expecting the worse after surgery, so we let her wake up slowly in the recovery room. But when she woke up, she was a totally different person. She was the sweetest, most behaved little girl. The first thing she said was, “That was not too bad”! ROTFLMAO! I was like, “what was all that screaming for then”? She said she was only a little scared and really hungry. In the recovery room, she ate two popsicles and a juice box.
Wheeling her out of Texas Children’s Hospital
When we got home, I took her to Olive Garden to have some soup (Zuppa Tuscana). She not only had soup, she had bread sticks, some of my Seafood Alfredo and even asked for dessert! So we shared a Tiramisu.
Mom and daughter on a “lunch date” after surgery
It turns out that appetite came from the steroids she got in surgery, coz the next day she wasn’t so good. She ate less and spiked a fever of 103.1! So I had to call her surgeon and we started her on antibiotics. She slowly getting better. Still having slight fevers and still pretty dependent on pain meds. It’s so hilarious how she acts 30 minutes after she takes her Vicodin – she’s high as a kite! LOL.
With a fever of 103.1. I almost ran her to the ER!
Of course, ice cream is the best post-tonsillectomy medicine!
